South Korean won exchange rate

Our exchange offer also includes the South Korean won currency, please visit our currency exchange office in the center of Katowice.

The first banknotes appeared in 1902, replacing the Korean yang, but eight years later they gave way to the Japanese yen when Korea became a Japanese colony in 1910. After regaining independence, the main currency in South Korea was the Hwan, which again became the national currency on June 9, 1962. The exchange of khvan for won took place until 1975 at an exchange rate of 10:1. Initially, the exchange rate was pegged to the dollar at 125:1, but in 1997 the exchange rate was switched to a free exchange rate. Some time later, as a result of the Asian financial crisis, it lost its value almost twice, which led to the abolition of coins.

After the official transition to the new currency, only two coins were issued in the country - 10 and 50, which were used as 1 and 5 won. On August 16, 1966, the Bank of Korea issued coins with denominations of 1, 5 and 10 won, which indicate the date of minting not in the Korean calendar but in the Gregorian calendar. Later, coins with values of 50 and 100 appear. Coins with values u200bu200bof 1, 5, 10, 50, 100, 500 won are now in circulation. The first banknotes varied in size depending on the denomination. The obverse depicted the symbol of the Bank of Korea, Independence Gate, Sunnemong and other architectural monuments, the reverse - the denomination. The last updated series of banknotes was released in 2007 with increased protection against counterfeiting. Currently, banknotes in circulation are 1,000, 5,000, 10,000 and 50,000 won.
