On July 30, 1980, the islands gained independence from Great Britain and France, and the name of the country was changed to Vanuatu (meaning "this land forever"). The currency was introduced into circulation in 1981, six months after regaining independence, the currency code is ISO 4217, its symbol vt, recognized throughout the country, is always used in writing. The introduction of VAT also resulted in the withdrawal of the Australian dollar from circulation in Vanuatu.
